8 Executable Actions to Show You Care about Animals

  1. Pets should wear collars with an ID tag, rabies vaccination tag, and city license. Also, chip pets for permanent identification and a faster return. Thank you, American Humane, for the reminder.
  2. If you are not carefully breeding a purebred line, PLEASE have your cat or dog spayed or neutered. Help save a life!
  3. Check the Food and Drug Administration's Web site regularly for notices about safety alerts and voluntary and involuntary pet food recalls. Discuss special nutritional needs with your veterinarian.
  4. Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 for any poison-related emergency 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. (A consultation fee may be required.)
  5. Listen to The HSUS and take action now! Don't buy a dog at a pet store. Don't buy a dog online. You can stop puppy mill operations. © 2013 The Humane Society of the United States. All rights reserved.
  6. If you really love your cat, don't declaw him. Keep his claws clean and sharp by training him to use a scratching post made of sisal rope.
  7. Volunteer at your local animal shelter. If you can't serve in such a capacity, make a donation to a shelter or rescue group. Our homeless furry friends will reap the many benefits.
  8. Do you have a Web site? If so, try to encourage people to adopt homeless animals by adding Petfinder™ widgets, search tools, and graphics.

Recent Questions from Our Clientele

Q. I need to find a skilled and knowledgeable groomer. Would you help me and offer some suggestions. I have had problems in the past.

A. Talking to groomers? Take the good advice of a top groomer and consummate professional who tries to educate people. What can owners do? The best strategy for healthier, happier pets is to take control and ask the right questions. For example, do you understand temperament and personality? How do you deal with behavior problems during the groom? Which animals are prone to infection? Do you have in-depth knowledge of breeds? What information can you give me about my dog's fur qualities and coat care? Do you regularly attend continuing education classes? Don't forget to inspect the facility's work space to see if grooming tables and instruments are kept clean and sterile. If you leave with the right answers (and observations), you should feel confident that your pet's welfare is their number one priority.
